​Another Week, Another Party

      On Monday, September 2,  I threw a big Labor Day birthday bash for my son Tommy.

       On Tuesday, September 3, I was back at my command center, aka the kitchen table, drawing up a battle plan for another party,

...to be held the following Monday, September 9.
      The occasion for this next shindig was to be a reunion of some of my hubby Tom's group of college friends from the University of Dayton who belonged to a campus service organization called the Appalachia Club, whose members spent  summers in the early 1970's doing service work in the community of Salyersville in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky,​

....​rehabbing houses,

...holding a summer camp for the local children, 

...visiting families,

...and experiencing life as it was at that time in the mountain hollers.

       And so I wanted to make this a nice get-together for the group.
      There would be thirteen of us altogether, with folks coming here to our Columbus suburb from eastern Kentucky, central Kentucky, Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, and Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Since most of the guests were travelling long distances (and therefore would have long drives home) we decided to make the reunion a lunch time event, with lunch to be served at 1 pm.
​      As soon as I'd drawn up my menu, along with my plan for pulling it off with the helping hands of my ever-dependable assistant,

...said assistant and I hit the ground shopping,

...baking,

...and all the other etceteras that go into party planning.
     As this meal was scheduled for early in the afternoon, I did the table staging the day before,

...and likewise drew up my plan of action for the day of.

        But not even the most OCD-esque plan can be carried out without help, and to this end my daughter Theresa,

...and two wonderful friends,

...came to the rescue.

       By great good fortune, one of my friends happened to be a young pastry chef hobbyist (though she's certainly good enough to be a professional),

...who  made us trays of beautiful mini-cupcakes.

       By 1 pm all the guests had arrived, 

...the food was set out,

...and soon thereafter we dug in.

      As it was a lovely, temperate day we opted to eat in the backyard.

      And the former members of the UD Appalachia Club spent the afternoon talking about those old times,

...and the times since.
