It didn't happen all at once, but rather it's been happening day by day.
Law firms required to pay a punitive tribute to President Trump in order to stay in business. Our country's elite universities under attack and defunded by President Trump and required to bend to his will and pay his Government to get their funding back.
President Trump and his family using Trump's presidency to make billions from cryptocurrency

 President Trump throwing himself a gargantuan military parade for his birthday.

Masked Federal agents decked out like storm troopers crashing into workplaces and in mass sweeps rounding up people who've committed no crime and who may or may not have proper legal documentation.

 Cruel and unusual treatment of immigrant detainees.

 Armed soldiers patrolling the streets of Washington, D.C.,

...with threats from President Trump of more soldiers to be stationed in other American cities whose mayors and governors are not of his political party.
Powerful businesses and media companies bowing and scraping to President Trump's commands and paying him billions to settle his personal lawsuits against them.
President Trump vowing to exact harsh retribution from his perceived political enemies and from the public servants that he's put on his payback list.

 President Trump using the United States Justice department as his personal tool of revenge,

...and reminding us that he hates his opponents and doesn't want the best for them.

People great and small losing their jobs and careers for opinions they've voiced in public or posted on social media because their employers live in fear of being targeted by President Trump. Or because they've been explicitly threatened by Trump's henchmen.

People now being afraid to speak or post their minds because under President Trump, our First Amendment rights are no longer protected.
All those things and more have been happening in our country day by day, over the weeks and months. But what it took for it all to truly come together for me were the images of these banners that now hang over two federal buildings,

...with the news that more banners are on track to be hung on other federal buildings.
And when I saw those images, what I actually saw were these images:

Sometimes a picture is more frightening than a thousand words.

A COVID Vaccine Hack

Yesterday I was sitting in the pharmacy waiting for my COVID shot. Next to me sat a girl who appeared to be in her twenties, and who I assumed was also waiting for a vaccine.
After a few minutes the pharmacist, a woman who appeared to be in her forties, came out and apologized to the girl and told her that she didn't qualify to receive the COVID vaccine. The young woman said that she was health care worker and would be at risk. The pharmacist said that, unfortunately, that didn't count. She asked the girl if she had any preexisting conditions. The girl replied that she didn't.
The pharmacist thought for a moment. "How about a mood disorder?"
The girl said she didn't have one. That was where I chimed in.
"Oh, come on," I said to the girl. "Don't you have something? How about anxiety?" I turned to the pharmacist. "Does anxiety count?"
"Yes, anxiety would count," said the pharmacist. To the girl she said, "How about anxiety? Any anxiety?"
"Um, no," said the girl.
So, here was the pharmacist and me, trying to give the girl a clue, but she just wasn't getting it.
"Surely you must have some anxiety," I said. "with the state of the country? The state of the world? The fact that you can't get a COVID vaccine? Doesn't that give you anxiety?"
Finally the girl got it and said that yes, she thought she had anxiety.
And so she got she got her COVID shot.
End of story.
MORAL: Make your anxiety work for you. Or go find yourself a pre-existing condition.

Why This Time Donald Trump's Pitiful Buffoonery Upset Me

After having dropped my Twitter account several years ago when Elon Musk took over, I re-joined X last week because so many of our politicians make statements on X and I wanted to be able to stay in the loop.
Though I hadn't signed up to be a follower of Donald Trump on X, the very first notification I received on my new X account was of the latest Trump post. I opened my timeline and was hit with this:

Of course it was just another round of Trumpian buffoonery played out on Trump's favorite internet song and dance stage, so I suppose I should have just blown off this nonsense the same way I and many of my fellow Americans blow off so much of the nonsense conceived in his warped geriatric brain pan.

But those words Trump wrote on that X meme and the fantasy picture that he concocted of himself upset me. For a number of reasons.
First and foremost, I'm upset because my daughter and my son-in-law, who happens to be a naturalized citizen of Mexican heritage, live and work in Chicago. They traverse the city every day on their bikes - they don't own a car - and I fear for their safety daily since the President of the United States memed his fantasy of turning the city into a war zone. Donald Trump may get a kick out of the images he AI-ed of Chicago exploding in flames beneath a formation of fighter helicopters, but for those of us whose dearly loved ones live in Chicago this is far from fun and games.
And it upset me that the President of the United States would declare war on any American city, the welfare of whose citizens is his sworn responsibility, and use his power to threaten its citizens.

And how cruel is this:

Trump obviously thinks it's witty to pilfer a quote from the character of the demented Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in the movie "Apocalypse Now," who loved the smell of napalm in the morning, not to mention terrorizing Vietnamese villagers by blasting "Ride of the Valkyries" from his helicopter squadron before spraying them with napalm.

The question of the legality and morality of Trump's deportation agenda aside, his joke about loving the "smell" of deportations is a declaration that he takes pleasure in deporting people, without a twinge of feeling for all the pain and suffering of the mothers, fathers, and children affected by his orders. That Donald Trump finds it all so funny makes him as brain sick and power mad as the brain sick and power mad movie character he styles himself after.

And finally, it upsets me that in his X meme Donald Trump, who went to a private military academy boarding prep school but then got out of actual military service thanks to his wealthy family arranging a deferment,

...disrespects those men and women who did serve their country. Men and women like my parents,

...my father-in-law,

...my husband,

...my son-in-law,

...and me, in my time as a Department of the Army civilian who served the soldiers and their families on army posts in Germany.

I'm reminded of the time during Donald Trump's first presidential campaign when an elderly veteran wanted Trump to have his purple heart medal as a token of his admiration. Instead of thanking the veteran for his service and his gesture and returning the medal, as he should have done, Trump asked the man if the medal was real or a copy. Upon being assure by the veteran that it was real, Trump said, "I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier. He then dropped the man's medal into his pocket.

And now this foul old man has the gall to post himself as this product of his imagination.

How pitiful.

The Moment You Know That The Person In Charge Of Your Country's Health Care Is Crazy

Last week while I was scrolling through the news stories, I came across this statement made by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during a press conference in Texas:

I know what a healthy child is supposed to look like. I’m looking at kids while I walk through the airports today, as I walk down the street, and I see these kids that are just overburdened with mitochondrial challenges, inflammation, you can tell it from their faces, from their body movement, and from their lack of social connection. And I know that's not how our children are supposed to look.
Now, never even mind the plethora of dubiosities in that statement, since so much of what comes out of RFK jr.'s pie hole - I mean, fruit, vegetable, nuts and seeds hole - is rank dubiosity.
According to Google AI (which I consulted on the question), RFK jr. doesn't take commercial flights these days:

So...when and why would he be walking through airports full of sickly-looking kids?
And what street does he go walking down that's also full of sickly looking kids? Does he mean the street in the aristocratic Georgetown neighborhood where he and his wife recently bought a 4,876 sq. ft., $4.4 million home?

(Of course, what do I know? Maybe RFK jr. actually is the neighborhood creep. After all, his children's babysitter alleged that she was molested by him, which RFK jr. has obliquely referred to as a skeleton in his closet).
And then, of course, there's RFK jr.'s much-razzed conceit that, without so much as a nurse's aide certification let alone a medical or any kind of science degree, he can diagnose a child's medical condition by a passing glance at their face and body movements (which, again, he shouldn't be checking out on every kid that he passes). And what - and how? - could he know anything about these kids' social connections, anyway?
But never mind all that, it's all just so much typical RFK jr. anti-science, slightly creepy hogwash. But there was one part of one sentence from his statement that leapt out at me: I see these kids that are just overburdened with mitochondrial challenges...
Overburdened with mitochondrial challenges? I thought. What the @#%! does that even mean?
Then it hit me what it meant: It meant that Robert F. Kennedy jr. is crazy. It meant that he's a 70 -year-old ex-heroin addict who used every day for 14 years starting in his teens, those important years of significant brain development when drug use can seriously and permanently affect that development, which in RFK jr.'s case it apparently did, and who later in life had a parasitic worm that ate part of his already drug-damaged brain.
And I thought now of all the crazy-sounding things RFK jr. has said over the years:
That it's safe to drink unpasteurized milk
That having fluoride in our water is making Americans stupider
That Blacks have stronger immune systems than whites.
That there's no vaccine that is safe and effective
That vaccines cause autism
That polio vaccine killed many more people than polio did.
That COVID and flu vaccines kill people.
That COVID targets Blacks and Whites, but that Ashkenazy Jews and Asians have more immunity.
That doses of vitamin A great enough to cause organ damage should be given to children instead of vaccine to fight measles, and that measles shouldn't be taken that seriously, anyway.
That he can see that children are overburdened by mitochondrial challenges by looking at their faces.
And it occurred to me in that chilling mitochondrial challenges moment that our health care is in the hands of a deranged old man, a geriatric mad scientist without the science. Only the madness.
Can't you see it in his face?

Right To Life, We Need You Now

Dear Right To Life,
It's been three years now since your grand moment, the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Your victory was the result of so much dedication, so much planning, so much organizing, the tireless work of so many people. And in those early heady days after the Supreme Court handed you your win, what euphoria there must have been among your supporters, what celebrations!
But all that was three years ago. These days, with your main mission long accomplished, you must be kind of at loose ends; I can't imagine you have nearly enough to do. But it's time for that to change: there's a new mission you're needed for, though in truth, it's just a branching out of what your mission has always been: to grant children the right to life.
Because the life of every child that you fought for is in danger. In fact, every day every life of every person in this country is in danger of being destroyed by gun violence. Mass shootings are a national epidemic, thanks to the easy availability to anyone of military-style assault rifles that can shoot ten bullets or more per second. Contrary to the National Rifle Association's meaningless little ditty, guns do kill people.
But we all know this already, and should we forget it for a while, should we be lulled into a false sense of security, sooner or later some unhinged young guy will take out his anger and/or insanity with an AR-15 on some random gathering of people at any public place you could think of, including, as we were so bitterly reminded last week, children at school or praying in church.

That's the absolute worst, when the mass shooting victims are children. And so you, who fought so long and hard for a child's right to life, can once again unfurl your banner and now make it your mission to fight for their right to live. If you launched a new crusade springing from Right to Life - call this crusade to save the lives of children and adults Right to Live - you already have have the money, the resources, the infrastructure, the strategy, the support, and mostly the power, and now you could use your might to take on the NRA and the gun-selling lobby that, sadly, control our government.

You can give power and influence to the gun control movement in a way that no other organization can. Our lawmakers will listen to you again, just as they did before.
Most Americans want more stringent gun control, most Americans want AR-15's banned, and all Americans want an end to the mass shootings that have extinguished too many lives and keep us living in fear for ourselves and our loved ones, especially our children. We're sick to death of lawmakers saying there's nothing they can do. And so a Right To Live movement would have the support of a large majority of Americans.
Even those Americans who might not have supported the anti-abortion goal of Right To Life would join up to be part of the life-saving goal of Right to Live.
Right to Life, you can rise up again in a new Right to Live movement.
And I would be the first to join you.
