Oh, the odd things that came out of Donald J. Trump's mouth during Tuesday night's debate. There was his word salad of a plan to replace the Affordable Care Act (which has, by the way, covered 50 million Americans in the past decade): And his claim that Kamala Harris wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison. And bragging about his support from anti-democratic, journalism-suppressing Hungarian autocrat and Putin ally Viktor Orbán. And then there was his contention that Democrats want to allow the execution of babies after they're born, which inspired Bette Midler to compose this meme: But of all the oddities and awfuties wrought by Donald Trump up on that debate stage, ...the one that - as we all know by now - has been generating the most - and most hilarious - commentary has been his internet-inspired assertion that in the town of Springfield, Ohio Haitian immigrants have been abducting their neighbors' pets and eating them. In the past two days there's been a veritable invasion of wickedly ironic memes: But joking aside now. Yesterday I was chatting with my daughter Claire (here with her hubby Miguel). We were having a laugh over the whole Trump "Haitians eating their neighbors' pets" thing when Claire said, "Seriously, though, if you had a neighbor who was so hungry that they had to resort to eating dogs, cats and ducks to keep from starving, shouldn't you have been helping them out and bringing them food so that they wouldn't have to go around trying to catch neighborhood animals to eat? I thought Claire had a worthwhile point. And so I'd like to share Claire's point with those stone-hearted politicians who actually believe - or say they do - that there are human beings in Springfield, Ohio who are reduced to eating other peoples' pets to survive, ...and I'd like to ask them: You who claim to care so much about the welfare of Springfield's animals, would you be willing to save these animals by providing food for those humans you believe are desperate enough to eat them?
Just some food for thought. BTW: Claire leaves on Saturday with a medical mission from Rush Hospital in Chicago for the Dominican Republic where they will give health care to a community of Haitian refugees who are currently living in an open air garbage dump outside of Santo Domingo.
