...Continued from yesterday: I never did return the the midway for a funnel cake. Instead Tom and I put visions of funnel cakes out of our heads and headed for the sheep barn, where we saw the sweet, sociable sheep, ...the Ku Klux Lambs, as we call the sheep who are covered to be kept clean for their upcoming judging, ...and the farm families who were preparing the sheep for their competitions, ....or just caring for them. Next we visited the poultry barn to see the ducks, ...and chicks,
Then we swung by the arts and crafts building,
...or one photograph or piece of art over another, ...or one food sculpture over another, ...or one miniature composition over another, ...or one pie or cupcake over another, ...or one amazing cake over another,
...or one piece of Brillo art over another, ...but I've always wondered: how do they judge one jar of honey over another? ...or one zucchini over another?
I guess one just has to have a really good eye for that sort of thing. After we'd finished touring the arts and crafts building we decided to seek out lunch from among the standard myriad food offerings. We settled for our usual Fair lunch from one of the places that offers as close to grilled options as one will find at the Fair, Tom opted for a smoked turkey leg and a side of coleslaw, ...that is to say, I'm assuming the leg was smoked - even though it had been sitting on a grill - as the meat was pink like ham and in fact tasted like ham. So be forewarned if you ever buy a so-called "grilled" turkey leg at the Fair. I had a "sloppy pig", which was a pulled pork and coleslaw sandwich - delicious and quite sloppy - with a side of not bad potato salad. After lunch, though still feeling fortified to resist the funnel cakes, we did, however, give in to a generous scoop of ice cream, ...from the Ohio Food Pavillion. We spent the rest of the day visiting the agricultural exhibits, ...and the commercial buildings, ...where I chatted with the friendly salesgals at the Creative Energy sunglasses table,
...and was given a coin by a preacher at a prayer station. After 6 hours of strolling the Fair grounds we were ready to call it a day, so we walked back to the midway, ...and exited through the secret portal by which we'd entered, to the exclusive parking lot where we easily found our car among the few parked there, ...while on the other side of the fence the crowd made their way to and from the public parking lot shuttle. Who can know the ways of Karma?
