I COULDN'T GET NO SATISFACTION AT BEST BUY, OR: A BUNDLE OF CONFUSION, PART 2

Picture
...Continued from previous post (See post from 6/29/2023, https://www.ailantha.com/blog/i-couldnt-get-no-satisfaction-at-best-buy-or-a-bundle-of-confusion-part-1) :
So then, here was my sister Romaine's idea for getting the disc reader tray of my new computer to open: As there was no "eject" button anywhere to be found on the body of the computer, nor did pressing the tray door do anything (in spite of the Best Buy salesperson's assurance that first powering up the computer then pressing the tray door would cause it to open), it seemed to Romaine, a computer engineer, that the key to opening the tray door must be on the computer screen. In fact, this solution was suggested in a Facebook comment yesterday by my friend Sharon Butler,

...who shared that on her Mac there is an "eject" icon on the screen that one clicks to eject a disc from the computer. Romaine also theorized that the disc reader door on my computer likely functioned in that way.
My sister directed me over the phone to open my file explorer, which I did, and then to look for an "eject" icon, which I also did,
Picture
...but I couldn't see any "eject" icon.
      "You sure?" Romaine said.
       "I'm sure," I said.
She then directed me to click "Desktop," which I did.
Picture
"How about now?" she asked. "You see it now?"
       "Nope," I replied.
"Okay," she said, "try clicking on the little blue box with the plus sign on it."
Picture
I did, and this popped up:
Picture
       "Anything?" she said.
       "Nada," said I.
After having me run through each function again, my sister gave up.
"I'm sorry, Patti," she said, "I just have no idea how to open that disc reader."
Once again I put the question to the internet: "How do you open the disc reader on the HP Pavilion tp01-2234?" Once again I could find no answer. I called my son Tommy, who has a masters in computer science.
After patiently listening to the long version of my tale of woe and confusion, Tommy suggested that maybe my computer didn't have a disc drive.
"But here's the slot for it, right here," I said, pointing to the slot as if he could see it over the phone.
Picture
Then it hit me. Tommy could in fact be on to something, and maybe I'd been asking the internet the wrong question.
I asked Tommy to stay on the line while I consulted the internet again, this time instead of asking how to open the disc reader on the
HP Pavilion tp01-2234, I asked if the HP Pavilion tp01-2234 had a disc reader.
        "Find anything?" Tommy asked.
Nah," I said. "Here's something that says that it doesn't have an optical drive. But nothing about not having a disc drive."  (Here's what I found):
Picture
"Uh, if doesn't have an optical drive," said Tommy, "then it doesn't have a disc drive,"
He went on to explain that the optical drive was the electric eyeball that read the disc. Hence, no eyeball, no disc reader.
I was flummoxed. "But why the heck put a disc reader slot on the machine if there's no disc reader?"
Tommy was equally flummoxed, but suggested that maybe a whole lot of machine fronts had already been manufactured when the corporate decision was made to nix the optical eyeball drive, so they just continued using the fronts without sticking in the disc tray. Maybe. However, he added, I could buy an external disc reader for about $20 and plug it into the computer.
Now plenty put out, I asked why I should have to pay for a disc reader when I was assured that the computer - the not cheap computer - that I bought included one?
Tommy suggested that if I felt strongly about it, then when I went back to Best Buy to return the extra keyboard I'd been sold - now here's irony for you: I was told that the computer didn't include a keyboard but did have a disc reader. Turned out the computer did include a keyboard but didn't have a disc reader - anyway, Tommy suggested that when I went to Best Buy to return the extra keyboard that I bought because the sales kid told me I needed to, I also tell them that since I was assured that the computer I bought had a disc reader, they should give me a disc reader free of charge.
"Do you think they'll give me a free disc reader?" I asked.
"Well, maybe they will. Or maybe they won't."
"Oh, they, will," I decided. "They absolutely will."
               To be continued...
