OMG! NOW WE KNOW WHY THE STREETS OF ST. LOUIS WERE EMPTY!

Picture
...Continued from yesterday:
In my previous post I recounted how during our recent trip to St. Louis my relatives and I found the downtown attractive,

...but empty of humans,

...except for the pods of people we saw at attractions such as the Arch, Union Station and a popular thoroughfare called Washington Street (see previous post www.ailantha.com/blog/a-town-without-people).
This lack of the living in downtown St. Louis was a mystery not only to us, but to some of my readers as well who posted comments on Facebook to ponder the emptiness of the St. Louis streets:

But then one reader posted this eye-opening article from forbes.com:
Picture
Turns out the number one most unsafe city in America is St. Louis, Missouri.

But apparently St. Louis is not only the most dangerous city in the U.S. A site I found called statistica ranked St. Louis the most dangerous city in the world outside of Central America, South America, and South Africa.

My friend then nailed the solution to the mystery of the empty streets of  St. Louis:

But we, the visitors were, alas, unaware. Mayhaps that was for the best. On the other hand, I expect we should consider ourselves lucky that, as we blissfully wondered the deserted, dangerous  streets of St. Louis, no one made it their business to make us aware.

St. Louis's crime statistics are skewed by the north of the city, which is extremely impoverished. Outside of the dangerous areas, it is as safe as any city. Downtown, Central West End, Clayton, Maplewood, Webster Grove (I could go on) are all safe. I have lived in St. Louis for years after moving from Dallas and this feels just as safe. The real reason downtown is empty is because developement has happened elsewhere in the city and St. Louis is very car-centric.
